Ben grew up in Del Rio, Texas and a suburb of Denver, Colorado. He earned a B.A in Anthropology from Rice University in 1983 and a J.D. from the University of Oregon in 1989. He is a member of the State Bars of Texas and Oregon, the Dallas Bar Association, and the Texas District and County Attorneys Association.

Ben was an Assistant District Attorney for Dallas County from 1998-2014, Bell County from 1996-1998, and the multi-county Judicial District of Hamilton, Comanche, and Bosque Counties from 1993-1996. He was an Assistant County Attorney for Val Verde County in 1992. Ben earned the Civil Prosecutor of the Year Award in the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office in 2011 and 2012.

Ben has extensive experience advising elected and appointed officials in many areas of law including election law, government contracts, employment law, and civil service. He has written articles on election and criminal law. Ben drafted legislation, which was ultimately enacted, to revise the Texas Election Code and testified on behalf of the bill before Texas Legislative committees. He also provided research that was instrumental in persuading the Texas Legislature to significantly broaden the availability of depositions in criminal cases.
